I'm a Tourism Major, Business Minor at GMU and was required to get this book for one of my tourism classes. After reading it, I was so surprised it was never required for my minor in the School of Management. Lead Like A General was actually the ONLY study material in which I truly learned the how-to and value of becoming a great leader in any company or organization around the globe. It was interesting to realize that a glimpse at the historical events of the Civil War had so much to do with the management and leadership techniques of today's business world. Lessons taught by the often forgotten generals of the Civil War proved how important it was to never underestimate the power of innovative thinking, cooperative strategy, integrity, and having the confidence to really make an effort to know your teammates/co-workers to know how they function best to complete a task at hand. The most important thing I got from reading LLAG was the idea of momentum, how to start it, how to keep it going, and how much power that has in making your business successful. As a graduate I am already seeing the effects of positive momentum in my own work in the tourism industry. Out of all my classes and all my textbooks in college, I would say Lead Like A General is a MUST HAVE for any undergrad or person trying to get some insight into how to develop the very best of themselves in their field of work.

Lead like a General was a very refreshing and interesting book to read - as the Author crafted an analysis of various leaders from civil war actions. I do like business books, but am not a civil war buff. So I was not sure what to expect and if it would hold my interest. What I found was a book that I could not put down, and one that I believe is helpful to me and anyone in business or public organizations. The only disappointment was when I finished...I wanted more. Hopefully Paul Gilbert is working on his next book.
Nice!
"Lead Like a General" pleasantly surprised me in many ways. Packed with interesting stories and historic icons, Mr. Gilbert, has penned a book with easy to use leadership tips and tricks which are applicable in numerous environments. For a mid or high level manager, the information is easily incorporated into daily meetings or discussions with co-workers. I even used one of his stories as a framework to "sell" my supervisor on a new initiative and it was accepted. Not being a history or civil war buff, I found this book to be full of interesting stories which both educated me and gave me a better understanding of the struggles of the Generals who commanded during the Civil War. If you are looking to improve your leadership style, develop new tips to help in some challenging situations, or to simply learn about some fascinating figures from history and how they conquered some of America's unique challenges, you should read "Lead Like a General." Highly recommended.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a quick read and demonstrates valuable business concepts using examples of good and bad leadership during the civil war. If you like history (especially U.S. Civil War history) and you are looking for insight on leadership in business, I expect you will enjoy this book as much as I did!
Author Paul Gilbert understands the power of evoking symbols of the great leaders of the past and their classic timelessness. Lead Like a General is an intriguing, to-the-point read (118 pages) bringing to life some seldom heard stories of the American Civil War that live on as leadership lessons for today. As George Santayana said, those who fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Highly recommend Lead Like a General for students of leadership and American history.
I like the book. My opinion is that Paul Gilbert has been very successful in describing the leadership behaviour of important military persons of the American Civil War. I am convinced that even in , modern times, (say the 21st century) there is still to learn a lot about the essence of leadership demonstrated by the protagonists of this book. A must read for each person interested in ,genuine, leadership...
I'll be quite honest in saying that as a college student, reading assignments are not something I am particularly excited or motivated to complete. However, I was assigned this book for one of my classes and found it extremely enjoyable. Just by the name I would not have picked it out for pleasure reading, but I found it to be an easy read while learning a great deal. I also am not a history buff, but found myself more interested in tactics and strategies used during the times of the Civil War.

I almost feel like I got a two for one deal! After I read this for class I decided to give it to my dad who enjoys reading history books on a regular basis. I was pretty sure he knew all there is too know about history, but after reading the book he told me he found it interesting and certainly stumbled upon facts and ideas that he had not known before..

Overall a great book! A+++
